Insomnia refers to inability to fall into a deep sleep. This can cause the feeling of tiredness, irritability, inability to concentrate, depression, and anxiety. While insomnia may be the cause of depression, depression may also cause insomnia. Several studies have shown that insomnia is linked to depression and vice versa.
Depression, on the other hand, refers to the problem with a person’s mood or what is called mood disorder. Depression causes a person to feel sad, hopeless, helpless, and self-loathing. It may also make a person lose interest in his or her daily activities, become, irritable, and angry, while in some cases, depressed persons might consider committing suicide.
The Link between Insomnia and Depression
Being deprived of sleep for quite a time can cause insomnia. Waking up several times at night to feed the baby or change diapers can really change one’s regular sleep patterns.
While other mothers get back to normal sleep patterns after the children have grown up, my sleep pattern was permanently altered. I am an avid reader so I would spend long hours at night reading.
I usually fall asleep long after midnight and I grudgingly get up early in the morning to prepare breakfast for the whole family. The children learned to behave in the morning knowing how irritable I was.
Slowly, I noticed that my children were always quiet and aloof around me and I envy mothers who could enjoy a good laugh with their kids. This made me sad and my sleepless nights became longer.
A person suffering from insomnia may find that he is very sleepy at day time. This happened to me and I would find myself dozing off while sitting down.
I feel so sloppy that I have to make extra effort to go out to a department store or a grocery store. I developed eye bugs and my skin became dull. I stopped visiting or meeting friends. I became a recluse and I felt depressed.
My depression made me feel anxious and I spend the whole night wide awake, ruminating things and feeling bitter that no one seemed to care. Actually, I was feeling miserable and I made people around me feel the same.
How Depressed People Become Insomniac
Depression is usually triggered by some events in our life which include death of a loved one, divorce, losing one’s job, relationship conflicts, feeling socially ostracized, drug abuse, and the onset of serious illness such as cancer.
Being bedridden can also cause depression. In terms of sleep, a small percentage may sleep longer time while others sleep for very short periods.
Research shows that a big percentage of people who are depressed become insomniac or they are unable to have a restful sleep.
Several studies suggested that depression and insomnia are related. Although it cannot be said that all people who have insomnia suffer from depression, still, a high percentage of insomniac people are experiencing chronic depression.
This means that these people feel sad and anxious most of the time. Their anxiety leads to their inability to fall asleep while some of them would wake up in the middle of the night and stay awake until morning.
All people experience depression in their lives. It is how we deal with it that matters most. If you let it become the focus of your thoughts at all times, you might end up becoming an insomniac.
On the other hand, if you let insomnia govern your nights, you might lose the love and respect of your children or friends and this can cause depression. This implies that although depression and insomnia are entirely different things, they are linked in many ways.
How to Treat Insomnia and Depression
The link between insomnia and depression is quite well established and treating one would mean treating both. There are several natural treatments for insomnia and depression that do not involve the use of medication. Medication should be short term because long term use of drugs may have serious side effects.
- Establish a Routine. This is true both for insomnia and depression sufferers. Establishing a regular schedule for sleeping can help a person get rid of insomnia. For example, I see to it that my children go to sleep at 8 o’clock at night and wake them up 6’oclock In the morning even on weekends. Their body clock would always signal them to sleep at 8 in the evening and wake up at 6 in the morning.Depression can sometime cause disorientation especially with time. You might plan to do the laundry and discover that you have been sitting for hours already. Having routine will help you become conscious of time so that you will know what happens each time of day.
- Set up targets. I have a list of what to do for the day so that I would be able to do something and forget my depressions. After I finish one task, I check my list and do the next task right away. Before I know it, it is already late afternoon and feeling tired after a whole day work, I immediately fall asleep after eating dinner.
- Exercise Regularly. Exercising enables the body to release chemicals known as endorphins, which are responsible for making people feel good. Exercise is also known to make people have pleasant and positive thoughts.
- Watch What You EatThere are foods and drinks that can make us lay awake long at night and thus, giving us the chance to think about problems and get depressed. Coffee should be avoided especially at night because it can keep us awake. Depression can be caused by obesity so if we want not to worry about obesity, avoid foods that have been noticed to make you gain weight fast.
